Bookcase
Not a big story behind this build. My wife was looking for a place to store the ever growing collection of children's books. The design of the bookcase came straight out of a Fine Woodworking magazine article ("Arts and Crafts Bookcase"), so not a lot of creativity there.
I did add my own touch with respect to the finish. I applied a complementary finish to that used on the Hutch and Kitchen Table. It involved a water based stain, followed by a sealer coat, then a gel coat glazing, and topped off with three coats of General Finish Arm-R-Seal. The wood of choice for this project was maple, which I had on hand and never found a prior good use for.
The frame above was also built out of maple and followed the same finishing procedures. The art work is my son's. We had the kids paint some pictures, and then had them blown-up at Walgreens. This is the second frame for this area/art. The first was a natural maple frame, but I couldn't stand how it paired with the bookcase. So, I rebuilt it.
