Stein Chairs

The Stein Chair was designed for my cousin's new home they were building in the greater NYC area. The inspiration for the piece came from a tiny magazine clipping, that depicted a bright orange Adirondack influenced chair with flowers and planters surrounding it.

This set was some of my earlier work, and was my first dabbling with outdoor furniture. Unfortunately, I made a poor choice on wood. Instead of going with a wood species known to be stable and resilient to outdoor weather extremes, I went with "paint grade" poplar. I figured that if I used a top quality exterior coating, that all would be fine. That was not the case. The extreme heat and direct sun light made the wood expand and contract to a point of splitting.

In hindsight, I should have either made the pieces out of something like white oak or a cedar species. Lesson learned :-(
