Fairy Wall Art

My daughter's first iteration of her bedroom incorporated a monkey theme and took advantage of a bedroom set I created for her when she was a baby (see chest of drawers and baby crib). As she has grown up, she graduated to a Big Girl Bed, and in turn wanted a room more in tune with her current passion - fairy princesses.

The first step in her room's transformation was to apply a wainscoting application to the walls. I also painted the walls a pleasant shade of pink and added a gray striped accent wall behind her bed. We found some nice art work on esty.com, some of which required me to build frames for.

There was a largish wall space that was still left as a blank slate over the chest of drawers. I always intended on building some floating shelves to fill it, but the fairy design came out of no where. To create the fairy, I found some silhouette art work on the internet, that I was able to blend together to form the concept for what is now the walnut fairy with cherry inlays. This project was my first experience with inlay work, which took me countless hours to figure out how I would tackle this task.

The moon, that was originally supposed to hang over the fairy, was later moved to the other side of the room. It seems to balance the room a bit better. I originally crafted six wooden stars out of a combination of cherry and maple, but that didn't satisfy my wife, so I spent the better part of 8 hours building another 8 stars, adding walnut to the mix, to fill the additional wall space around the room. They are a nice addition to the space, seeing now my daughter "can see stars while lying in bed".
